Purpose: The skills assessment gives an opportunity for all Coaches to evaluate a player’s capabilities in batting, catching, throwing, and running. This information is then used during the Draft meeting to enable Coaches to select players, with the ultimate goal being to achieve balanced teams for the season. Through this process, all teams should have players who are at all levels of skill (advanced, average, and beginner).
Process:
* Pitcher/Catcher Assessment: All teams will need at least 2 pitchers and 1 catcher. If a Player has the ability to, or wishes to Pitch and/or Catch during the season, s/he will stay until the end, where they will be given an opportunity.
FOR COACHES:
Process:
- When the Player’s name is called, s/he will come into the field area with helmet, bat, and glove – and go to the batter’s box with bat and helmet on.
- Player will be thrown 5-6 pitches to hit. On the last pitch/hit, s/he will drop the bat and run around the bases 1st to 3rd.
- Player should then get their glove and go to the Shortstop position, where an adult batter will hit 3 ground balls and 2 popups to the player.
- Player will field the balls and throw to 1st baseman.
- Player will field 2 popups. Player will field the balls and throw to Home.
- The Player will then go to 1st base and wait for the next player to bat.
- Once finished at 1st base, the Player is released from the tryout, or they may remain for the Pitcher/Catcher Assessment* process at the end.
* Pitcher/Catcher Assessment: All teams will need at least 2 pitchers and 1 catcher. If a Player has the ability to, or wishes to Pitch and/or Catch during the season, s/he will stay until the end, where they will be given an opportunity.
